MSRBL Status Update

As some of you have noticed the project has been lacking updates since mid last year.

We do intend to bring the RBL and Signature files back to life as soon as possible.

We are currently porting the parsers to work with the "newer" MailScanner notification mails and also to support notifications for multiple messages as previously these just caused parser errors. This should be ready fairly soon and once tested and we've re-parsed all notifications we will announce on our list/blog when we have fresh content. The main reason for these changes to be delayed is that most of our time has been spend on improving our DNS History service which has been quite demanding.

Extra rsync mirrors and usage reminders

Hi,
I just wanted to send out a quick update to say we've recently added some more mirrors for rsync downloads, thanks to lividpenguin.com we now have 3 rsync mirrors.

I'm not sure why but around the 14th of December 2008 we started to see a big increase in signature downloads over a period of about 2 weeks. I've done a bit of Google work but so far I've been unable to see what might have caused such a sudden increase in usage. If anyone has any ideas I'd be happy to hear them :).

We would also like to remind people:
1) Please don't download the signature files more than once per hour (at an absolute maximum 15 minutes).
2) Make sure your rsync script refers to the old version when updating the signature files (by downloading over the top of the current version, or use --compare-dest to point to the current version) to save time and bandwidth downloading the complete file each time.
3) Excessive downloads are likely to result in bans from the mirrors (please use the contact form in case of issues).

New style website

We have released our new website today.

Some features are not currently available but will be soon. One of the main features of the new site is to allow you to browse the full history for an IP/AS number, the previous version of our site limited the output to 60 entries (30 current + 30 inactive).

As always please post comments via the contact form or on the MSRBL mailing list.

SPAM or NOT

We've just completed our public SPAM image rating system.

http://spamornot.org/

If you have a few spare minutes please help rate the images shown on the site as "spam" or "not spam".

Once we have enough ratings for the images on the site our aim is to create signature files based on the results from this site, such as a signature file including only images that get a >90% SPAM rating and another with >80% etc which will allow sites to configure how trusting they are of the MSRBL and public rating service.
